Celebrating Graduates!

The annual tradition in SEO PhD program

What feelings and thoughts might surface during the hooding ceremony after a marathon-like Ph.D program? It seems the graduation ceremony, marking the end of challenging years and the beginning of a new chapter, holds crucial meaning for those earning their doctoral degrees.

This year, my cohort, Becca, graduated. She has impressively completed her degree with extraordinary talent in just four years, and PhD students all came together to honor her achievement.

Our SEO Ph.D. program has been hosting a special event for our graduates for the past three years. While Ashley was in charge initially, Nataliia has taken over the role for the last two years. We are always grateful to those who step up to organize these celebrations, and I feel lucky to be part of such an amazing group of friends.

So, what did we plan for this year’s celebration?

From the entrance of the auditorium to the hooding ceremony, we energetically cheered for Becca, holding balloons printed with her various facial expressions. We also wore matching T-shirts, adding a cute touch to our collective celebration.

(We missed the one Becca balloon inside the student union… lol)

The faculty members seem intrigued each year by the event we prepare. With the tradition now exceeding three years, perhaps the expectations are set a bit higher?

What about previous events?

In 2023, at Ashley and Ace’s graduation, Ph.D. students turned into dinosaurs, shouting their friends’ names and capturing everyone’s attention at the ceremony.

In 2022, it was Jaewoo’s ceremony. Students carried placards bearing Jaewoo’s face and initials, catching the eye of everyone present as we celebrated his milestone together.

Celebrating the end of a chapter filled with stories alongside friends is a true blessing. I am proud to belong to a program with such a cherished culture of camaraderie, and I eagerly hope this joyful tradition continues to thrive.

Go Vols!
